Marketing doesn't have to be intimidating!

Marketing is one element that many authors shy away from. Sometimes, that's because authors don't like the idea of self-promoting, whereas other authors are unsure of how to market their books in a way that feels authentic and not salesy.
Despite possible reservations, though, marketing is a crucial element to any book launch! After you've put in so much hard work, your work deserves to be seen, and marketing will help the right readers find your books.
Marketing doesn't have to be scary, especially with so many options available for authors to take advantage of. Here are three unique ways to market your book.
Create social media accounts for your fictional characters.
While it might sound strange to create a social media account for someone who doesn't exist in real life, creating a social media account for your protagonist (or antagonist, if you want to mix things up!) can bring a lot of interest toward your book.
Fans of your book will likely be eager to learn more about the lore behind your characters, and having a social media account for your character is a great way to bring readers into your fictional world. Avid readers will also appreciate the opportunity to interact with their favorite characters.
You can even create multiple accounts for different characters—just make sure you keep the posting organized and on the right account! If you do this, having characters interact with each other online can give a unique twist to your marketing campaigns. Plus, it can be a fun writing exercise that offers you the chance to explore different aspects of your characters.
Make a book trailer.
If you've ever gotten sucked in by a good movie trailer, then you know how powerful a film teaser can be as a marketing tool. Book trailers can do the same thing, promoting your book in a visual way that piques readers' curiosity and leaves them wanting to know more.
You'll want to think of your book trailer like a movie or TV trailer; don't give away everything about your story, but hint at the overarching themes and conflicts in your book enough to make the trailer memorable.
You have a variety of ways you can make your book trailer depending on your budget, the amount of time you want to put in, and your book. Some authors prefer to go simple, reading an excerpt from their book (or having someone else read it) over the cover image, and other authors outsource actors or illustrators to create more complex trailers. If you're not sure what a good book trailer looks like, you can check out this article to see several examples.
Collaborate with BookTubers, BookTokers, and Bookstagramers!
If you're wondering what the heck a BookTuber, BookToker, or Bookstagrammer is, don't worry, we've got you covered! These are all book influencers who often review their favorite books on YouTube (BookTokers), TikTok (BookTokers), or Instagram (Bookstagrammers).
While it's always a good idea to promote your book on your own social media accounts, you can reach a much wider audience by having your book featured on an influencer's platform. Receiving a genuine review from someone who's trustworthy and has cultivated their own community of book lovers also gives your book a sense of credibility.
It's important to note that individual influencers offer different services, so you'll want to do some research to figure out what works best for you and which influencers have an audience that is likely to find your book engaging. For example, if you're writing a cozy mystery, you'll probably want to find an influencer who reviews other cozy mysteries rather than someone who focuses on psychological horror books.
Seeing a reader fall in love with your book is incredibly rewarding, and marketing can help you put your book into readers' hands! When you find ways to market your book that you actually enjoy, marketing can feel less like a chore and more like storytelling.

Any genre of writing takes time to master, but creative nonfiction has its own unique challenges that can make it tricky to write—though doing so is incredibly gratifying as it allows you to share your story, and the stories of others, in an authentic way, connecting you to people you may have never met. Reading works in the genre is a great way to learn what makes creative nonfiction so wonderful, and Creative Nonfiction’s magazine is a perfect place to do so.
Creative Nonfiction, a site created by The Creative Nonfiction Foundation, “inspires and supports writers of true stories by providing publishing venues and educational opportunities for a diverse range of creative nonfiction writing and writers; serves as a strong advocate for the genre, helping define the ethics and parameters of the field; and aims to broaden the genre’s impact not only in the publishing world but also in the arts, humanities, and sciences.” On its site, you can read a variety of essays in the genre, view the various publications, and learn about the genre. If you’re someone interested in creative nonfiction, we definitely recommend checking out the site!
